Travel insurance with trip cancellation and interruption coverage can help Canadian travellers at two stages of their trip: before they leave home and while they’re travelling. Trip cancellation coverage helps protect travellers from events that leave them unable to travel before their departure date, while trip interruption coverage supports travellers financially when their trip is interrupted on or after their departure date.
While benefits, benefit limits and covered reasons to cancel will differ across policies, trip cancellation and interruption travel insurance coverage generally provides financial reimbursement for prepaid, unused portions of a trip that are non-refundable and non-transferable to another travel date, plus new costs associated with needing to make changes to an itinerary or to return to a home province or territory earlier than intended.
Which Travelex plans offer Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage?
The Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance benefit is included in two Travelex plans:.

Travelex’s third plan - the Medical Only plan - does not provide any trip cancellation and interruption coverage.
What does Travelex’s Trip Cancellation and Interruption benefit cover?
Travelex can provide travellers with reimbursement for costs related to cancellations or interruptions for covered causes both pre- and on-trip. The costs that can be covered are the unused portions of any prepaid expenses that are nonrefundable and nontransferable to another travel date (up to the maximum covered amount) or new expenses encountered as a result of an interruption.
The benefit limits for the Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan are:
- Trip Cancellation coverage: Up to the maximum covered amount purchased
- Trip Interruption coverage: Unlimited (subject to applicable benefit limits set out in the policy wording)
- Missed Connection coverage: Up to $1,000
This plan is available on single-trip policies only.
The benefit limits for the All-Inclusive plan are:
- Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage:
Single trip policy: Up to $3,500 per trip
Multi-trip policy: Up to $3,500 per trip and $6,000 per policy - Missed Connection coverage: Up to $1,000

What are Travelex’s covered causes for Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage?
Whether you’re a Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan or All-Inclusive plan policyholder, it’s important to understand what is — and isn’t — a “covered cause” when it comes to Travelex’s trip cancellation and interruption coverage.
At Travelex, a covered cause includes the following:
- The sudden and unforeseen medical issues of yourself or your travel companion
- The sudden illness or death of a family member, travel companion, or someone you’ll be staying with on your trip
- The quarantining of yourself, your travel companion, or your travel companion’s spouse
- Natural disasters or weather conditions
- Permanent job loss or employer change

Does Travelex provide travel insurance coverage for missed connections?
Missed connections can be stressful, but Travelex can help reduce some of the stress. If you’re a Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan or All-Inclusive plan policyholder, your policy provides coverage for missed connections under the Missed Connections benefit. This means if a covered cause occurs before or after your originally scheduled departure date and causes a missed connection or a travel disruption that prevents you from travelling, you can receive financial support.
Missed-connection coverage reasons include missing your next connection because your current transport leaves later than originally scheduled; you and/or your travel companion are delayed for at least six hours in arriving to your destination or your home because of a delay; schedule change or cancellation of your common carrier; and more.

Does Travelex provide travel insurance coverage for travel delays?
Unfortunately, travel delays are sometimes unavoidable when you’e travelling. If you’re a Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan or All-Inclusive plan policyholder, Travelex provides coverage for travel delays under the Trip Interruption benefit.
Travelex’s covered reasons are listed in the policy wording and include the mechanical failure of your connecting private passenger vehicle or common carrier; a traffic accident; an emergency police-directed road closure; or weather conditions, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions.
